Abstract

A coding apparatus 10 combined with a portable bag-closing sewing machine 12 to print a message on a bag 150 utilizes a mounting bracket 14 fixed to the machine and a carriage 16 pivotally mounted to the mounting bracket for movement between first and second positions, carriage spring means being provided to bias the in carriage toward first position. The carriage supports a rotatably mounted type carrying, printing wheel. When an oversized, thicker than normal bag passes through the machine and coding apparatus, the carriage swings from first to second position, providing clearance for the thicker bag while permitting clear, legible printing of the message on the bag. The printing wheel is also slidably mounted on the axle to permit shifting movement of the wheel along the axle. The printing wheel has an inner disc sandwiched between a pair of outer discs providing an improved type retaining apparatus which is spring loaded to selectively separate to facilitate type insertion or removal. <IMAGE>
