Abstract

An apparatus for cleaning berries includes a separator which receives berries and waste material entrained in water and separates the berries from the waste material by causing the entraining water to flow over a number of surfaces which have corners. The relatively light waste material is carried around the corners by the water whereas the relatively heavy berries pass straight on. The separator comprises a vertical array 60 of U- shaped channel members, the bottoms of the U's being upwardly inclined so that water with the entrained waste and berries is incident upon them. Before reaching the separator the berries are first broken up into individual berries by means of a loosening unit 30 and adhered waste material is detached from the berries in a washing unit 50. After passing through the separator the berries are dried in a continuous centrifuge 70. <IMAGE>
