Abstract

202,116. Bullock, C. A. H. June 21, 1922. Inking-apparatus. - Printing-presses, of the kind described in Specifications 173,041 and 184,869, having an inking-roller and an impression roller carried on the opposite ends of pairs of arms pivoted to a swinging frame and adapted to be brought alternately into contact with the type, are provided with inking-mechanism of the kind comprising an intermediate roller arranged between a ductor roller and a distributing-drum and having its spindle mounted in eccentric slots in oscillating plates whereby the distributing roller is brought alternately into contact with the ductor roller and the distributing-drum. The inking-roller 14 is carried by arms 11 pivoted at 13 to the oscillating frame 9 and receives ink when the frame 9 is at its lowermost position by con. tact with a distributing-drum 22, to which ink is supplied from a ductor roller 20 in a trough 21 by an intermediate roller 19. The latter is mounted in slots 23<a> in a pair of pivoted, toothed quadrants 23 gearing with pinions on the shaft 25 of the drum 22, so that when the quadrants are oscillated the intermediate roller 19 moves alternately into contact with the ductor roller 20 and distributing-drum 22 and the latter is also rotated. The quadrants are supported in normally raised position by a spring 26, and are depressed by contact of the swinging frame 9 with rollers 28 on pintles 27. On each upward movement of the frame 9, the ductor roller is rotated a small amount by means of a ratchetwheel 30 engaged by a pawl 31 pivoted to one of the quadrants. Cam ends 32 on the drum 22 engaging rollers 33 on the frame, move the drum endwise, and the drum is connected to its shaft 25 by a free-wheel device so as to be rotatable in one direction only. The inking-roller 14 carried by the arms 11 is normally held in contact with the type during the upward swing of the frame 9 by means of a spring 16 on the shaft 13, one end of the spring being secured to a frame 17 carrying a handle 18. Cylinder machines.-At the end of the upward movement of the frame 9 the arms 11, which carry the impression roller 15 at their other ends, are swung over by the lifting of the upper gripper flap 35 to bring the impression roller 15 into position for contact with the type on the next downward swing. The arms 11 are held in this position by a pivoted catch 43 engaging a notch in one of the arms until rollers 45 on the shaft of the roller 15 enter guides 46 at the side of the machine frame and maintain the roller 15 in contact with the sheet to be printed. At this moment the catch 43 is released by contact of its curved extension 43a with the top of the machine frame. Gripper mechanism.-At the end of the upward stroke of the frame 9 the upper gripper flap 35, which is normally pressed against the lower flap by springs 36, is raised to receive the sheet by the action of studs 40 and cam slots 39 in a pair of plates 37 mounted on a rod 38 bridging the machine frame 1, the extremities 41 of the rod 38 projecting through slots 42 in the machine frame in the way of the arms of the frame 9. When the latter commences to move downward, the upper flap 35 is released and grips the sheet.
