Abstract

Collision avoidance apparatus for assessing manoeuvres of a first vehicle (6) to avoid collision with other vehicle (22) in which a region is computed for the other vehicle which, if avoided by the first will assure that the latter avoids the other vehicle by at least a predetermined distance (CPA). The region is defined by lines joining the following points:- the point (49) at which the first vehicle (6) would be at the CPA from the other vehicle (22) when on a heading (38) to cause the other vehicle (22) to pass ahead; the possible point (51) of collision of the two vehicles (6) based on the present speeds (vectors 23, 24) of the two vehicles and the present heading (42) of the other vehicle; the point (52) at which the first vehicle (6) would be at the CPA from the other vehicle (22) when on a heading (41) to cause the other vehicle to pass astern; and the points of intersection (56, 57) of a line (55) parallel to the heading (42) of the other vehicle (22), and spaced from it by the CPA on the first vehicle side with said astern and ahead headings. <IMAGE>
