Abstract
A missile, e.g. an optically tracked wire guided missile is stabilised during the launch and initial flight phase by a cable brake 6 which unwinds and passes through an orifice 5 of smaller diameter, thus producing an aligning drag force on the tail of the missile during flight. The cable 6 is of limited length, sufficient for the initial flight phase, and is stored on a reel 4 located in the missile tail unit 3 or at the launch point. The turns of cable are held by a normally solid thermoplastic compound 7 on the reel 4 and the compound serves as a coolant and lubricant on melting during draw-off. The guidance command wire 9 may be wound around the unit 3. <IMAGE>
