Abstract

An apparatus 3 for generating a recording time code signal, e.g. for use in a video tape editing operation, comprises a time code data signal generator 12 associated with a time code signal forming circuit 11 which produces a recording time code signal consisting of bi-phase coded signals. The recording time code signal is associated with an information signal and then recorded on a recording medium in word units. The polarity of a specific bit signal of a fixed binary bit or value in a word unit of the recording time code signal is detected, and a circuit 15 changes the fixed binary bit in accordance with the polarity of the specific bit signal. Thus, a word unit of the recording time code signal, having bit signals with a constant relative polarity after the above specific bit signal, is derived from the circuit 11, so that the phase at the end of the last character of the time code signal will be known whereby, in an editing operation, new time code characters associated with additional information can be generated to be compatible in phase with the existing time code signal. <IMAGE>
