Abstract

A telephone answering machine having a line interface circuit including a series of detectors, each sensitive to a predetermined input signal of audio frequency, for example a pay-tone signal, dialling signal and a ring signal, and a control unit which includes a memory, a processor, and outputs which are connected to sound recording and reproducing means in the machine, the arrangement being such that when the machine is operating in a predetermined mode and a logic output signal is applied to the control unit from one of the detectors, there is a predetermined interval of time within which the control unit is prevented from applying a control signal to the sound recording and reproducing means. The predetermined interval is determined by information stored in the memory or by a coded signal applied to a further input to the control unit from diode links or the like.
