Abstract

An external combustion unit of a Stirling engine comprises a fan 20 for supplying air, a pilot burner 22, a main fuel injector 24 and a catalytic combustor having a thermally stable and oxidation resistant monolith 26 made from and/or carrying a catalytic material and including a multiplicity of flow paths for catalytic combustion or combustible gases and injected fuel. The monolith is a woven gauze or corrugated sheet made of a base metal, or a base metal alloy which may contain a platinum group metal. The base metal may contain more than 20 wt.% total of nickel and chromium, and may also contain aluminium, cobalt and carbon, remainder iron. A platinum group monolith contains at least 10% P.G.Metal. The monolith is coated with an oxygen containing layer before the catalyst is applied as a layer of thickness 2 to 15 microns. <IMAGE>
