Abstract

A technique for determining the potential of a metallic structure 1 relative to a surrounding electrolyte, sacrificial anodes being provided for the cathodic protection of the structure, avoids the necessity to on provide special reference electrodes. One of the sacrificial anodes 2 is used as a reference electrode, and the potential difference which exists or would exist between that anode 2 and the structure 1 in a condition of effective electrical isolation of the anode from the structure is determined. A resistor 4 electrically connects that anode 2 to the structure 1 and a D.C. power supply 8 is coupled between the anode 2 and the structure 1. The aforesaid condition is indicated by equality between the current in the resistor 4 and the current from the power supply 8, and from the voltage then measured across the resistor 4 the required relative potential can be determined. In disclosed apparatus a comparator 13 output, generated in response to a comparison between these two currents, controls the D.C. power supply 8 to achieve such equality. <IMAGE>
