Abstract

A heat treatment is performed by admitting to the working chamber of the furnace a gas mixture comprising inert gas, an oxygen- bearing medium and a hydrocarbon (typically 81% N2; 4% air and 15% natural gas). The hydrocarbon and oxygen-bearing medium react together. To ensure that the reaction is self sustaining, a conditioning gas mixture comprising inert gas and reducing gas is admitted to the chamber before the heat treatment mixture. Supply of the conditioning mixture (typically 89% N2; 7% natural gas, and 4% NH3) is continued until the oxygen potential (as indicated by a suitable meter) is reduced to a chosen value. The supply of the conditioning mixture is then stopped, and the supply of the heat treatment mixture started. The heat treatment may be carburisation, decarburisation, carbonitriding, hardening or annealing.
