Abstract
A process for the purification of terephthalic acid to remove organic impurities therefrom comprises hydrogenating a 10 to 30% aqueous solution of terephthalic acid containing organic impurities at a temperature of from 210 to 320 DEG C under a pressure such that the solution is maintained in the liquid state in the presence of a catalyst made of an alloy consisting of 90 to 98% by weight of palladium and 2 to 10% by weight of ruthenium, the catalyst being in the form of a membrane and hydrogen for the hydrogenation being supplied to the terephthalic acid solution through the membrane catalyst under a pressure of from 10 to 150 atm.
