Magnets.-Apparatus for assembling spool-heads on electromagnet cores comprises a base 6 for supporting and positioning the core, an intermediate member 11 yieldably mounted on springs 12, and a punch 17 which operates with the intermediate member to force two spool-heads on to the core. The core, for example, a telephone-receiver electromagnet consisting of a bent piece 1, Fig. 10, is placed, together with the lower spool-head 3 on a steel block 8 secured to the base. The member 11 slides on fixed pins 13 and has a groove 11<1> through which passes the vertical leg of the core, and a recess 11<a> which holds the upper spool-head 2. The punch 17 has a groove 17<a> of a width slightly greater and of a length slightly less than the core. The two portions 19 are of a tool steel formed with cutting edges 19<1> so that the metal of the core is sheared or " staked " as at 5, Fig. 11, to secure the spool-head 2. When the punch carrier 14 is depressed, blocks 15 engage the member 11 which forces the spool-head 3 to the bottom position; the punch forces on the spool-head 2 and performs the staking operation. To remove the assembled unit, an ejector pin 24, Fig. 5, is slidably mounted in the intermediate member, and is connected to a lever arm 25. A bar 21 which normally covers the front of the recess 11<1> is pivoted to a lever 31 adapted to be operated by hand. A pin-and-slot connection 27, 28, is provided between the levers 25, 31 so that the front of the recess 11<1> is uncovered before the ejector pin moves.
