Abstract

A digital tape measure includes a housing 10, an elongate flexible member 20 at least partially inside the housing, the member having a variable adjustable length outside the housing, a resiliently operated means for retracting the flexible member into the housing, and means for providing a digital measure of the variable length. The digital measure means includes a counter which counts up pulses as the flexible member is drawn from the housing, and counts down as the flexible member is retracted into the housing and pairs of contacts, the pairs being bridged successively by a contact moved by the member 20 for producing the pulses. <IMAGE>
