Abstract

An electronic tape measure is provided with a linear encoder 5 and a rotary encoder 2, 3 which measure displacement of the tape 1. Both encoders feed a correlator 4 which checks the signals for error and feeds a counter/calculator 6 and display 7. The tape may be ribbed to mesh with a ribbed pulley 2. <IMAGE>

Description

Duel Encoder for Electronic tape measure THIS INVENTION RELATES TO ELECTRONIC MEASURING DEVICES .
ELECTRONIC TAPE/LINE MEASURING GAUGES EXIST IN MANY FORMS, A LINE MEASURING GAUGE MAKES USE OF A ROTARY OR LINEAR MOVEMENT SENSOR TO DETECT THE MOVEMENT OF THE MEASURING ELEMENT.
IT IS PROPOSED BY THE PRESENT INVENTION TO MAKE USE OF BOTH LINEAR AND ROTARY SENSORS TO DETECT MOVEMENT OF THE MEASURING ELEMENT. AND THEREFOR CALCALATING THE AMOUNT OF ELLEMENT DRAWN OR RETURNED TO THE MEASURING ELEMENTS HOLDER.
THE SENSORS MAY BE OPTICAL OR PHYSICAL IN OPERATION THE MEASURING ELEMENT/LINE MAY HAVE A SMOOTH OR RIBBED SURFACE, IN THE CASE OF THE RIBBED ELEMENT, THE RISS MESH WITH A RIBBED ROTARY PULLEY, ENSURING NO SLIPPAGE TAKES PLACE DURING OPERATION OF THE ROTARY ENCODER AN EXAMPLE OF OPERATION NOW FOLLOWS WITH REFERENCE TO FIG. 1 THE RIBBED ELEMENT (1) IS DRAWN OVER RIBBED PULLEY (2) ROTARY MOTION SENSOR (3) DETECTS MOVEMENT OF PULLEV AND SENDS CORRESPONDING DATA TO CORRELATOR (4) , WHILST THE ELEMENT IS PASSING OVER THE ROTARY ENCODER. PART OF THE ELEMENT IS PASSING THROUGH/OVER A LINEAR MOTION SENSOR (5) . THE DATA FROM THIS SENSO@ IS SENT TO CORRELATOR (4) BOTH DATA SIGNALS ARE CHECKED FOR ERROR, AND ADJUSTED ACCORDINGLY.
THE MODIFIED SIGNAL IS THEN SENT TO A CALCALATOR/ COUNTER CIRCUIT (6) hND THE RESULT IS DISPLAYED ON DISPLAY (7).

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIM 1
    A LINEAR MEASURING DEVICE COMPRISING A A MOVABLE MEASURING ELEMENT, A SENSOR FOR DETECTING MOVEMENTS OF THE MEASURING ELEMENT AN ELECTRICAL PULSE/DATA GENERATOR COUPLED TO THE SENSOR, AN ELECTRONIC COUNTER/CALCALATOR CIRCUIT CONNECTED TO A DISPLAY.
    CLAIM 2 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO CLAIM 1 IN WHICH THE ELEMENT IS FLEXABLE AND THE SENSOR INCLUDES A FORTARY ELEMENT EMGAGING WITH THE MEASURING ELEMENT SO AS TO BE TURNED BY LINEAR MOVEMENT THEREOF AND PRODUCES DATA ACCORDINGLY.
    CLAIM 3 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO CLAIM 2 IN WHICH THE ELEMENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH PHYSICAL, MASNETIC OR OPTICAL MEASURING POINTS AND THE SENSOR INCLUDE CORRESPONDINS DETECTORS CAPABLE OF SENSING SUCH MEASURING FOINTS.
    CLAIM 4 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO CLAIM 1 WHERE THE LINEAR DETECTOR HAS CORRESPONDING DTECTOR MEANS TO SENSE THE MEASURING POINTS MENTIONED IN CLAIM 3.
    CLAIM 5 LA MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO CLAIMS 1 AND 2 WHERE THE MEASURING ELEMENT HAS RIBS, INDENTATIONS OR TEETH ALONG ITS ENTIRE LENGTH CLAIM 6 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO CLAIM 5 2, 3 AND 4 WHERE THE DETECTOR/SENSORS ARE CAPABLE OF LOCATING WITH OR MESHING WITH THE MEASURING ELEMENT THERFOR PRODUCING CORRESPONDING DATA TO THE MEASURING POINTS.
    CLAIM 7 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO ANY OF THE PREVIOUS CLAIMS WHERE THE ROTARY AND LINEAR DETECTOR/SENSORS ARE USED SIMULTANEOUSLY PRODUCING SERIAL OR PARALLEL DATA ACCORDINBLY.
    CLAIM 8 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO CLAIM 7 WHERE THERE IS PROVIDED A CORRELATOR/DATA PROCCESSOR CAPABLE OF DECODING THE SERIAL PARALLEL DATA PROVIDED BY THE DETECTOR/SENSORS CLAIM 9 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO AN@ OF THE PREVIOUS CLAIMS WHERE THE DATA PRODUCED MAY REPRESENT INCREMENT OR DECREMENT INFORMATION ACCORDING TO THE MEASURING ELEMENTS MOVEMENT.
    CLAIM 10 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO AN, OF THE PREVIOUS CLAIMS WHERE THE MEASURING ELEMENT MAY BE A THIN LINE OF CIRCULAR CROSS SECTION.
    CLAIM 11 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO ANY OF THE PREVIOUS CLAINS WHERE THE MEASURING ELEMENT MAY A TAPE AS FOUND IN MORE CONVENTIONAL DEVICES.
    CLAIM 12 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO ANY OF THE PREVIOUS CLAIMS WHERE THERE IS PROVIDED A CALCALATOR WITH ALL THE USUAL CALCALATOR FUNCTIONS CAPABLE OF DECODING SERIAL OR PARALLEL DATA DIRECTLY FROM THE DETECTOR/ SENSORS.
    CLAIM 13 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO ANY OF THE PREVIOUS CLAIMS WHERE THE CALCATOR W WITH ALL THE USUAL CALCALATOR FUNCTONS IS CAPABLE OF DECODING DATA PROVIDED BY A CORRELATOR/DATA PROCCESSOR AS MENTIONED IN CLAIM B CLAIM 14 A MEASURING DEVICE ACCORDING TO ANY OF THE PREVIOUS CLAIMS WHERE THERE IS PROVIDED A DISPLAY CAPABLE OF REPRESENTING THE MEASUREMENT DATA AND FUNCTIONAL DATA PROVIDED BY DETECTOR/SENSOR, CORRELATOR, CALCALATOR.
