Abstract

A rotatable separator barrel for the wet separation of solids, e.g. coal and shale into three fractions, has opposed end portions 11, 12 each with a respective annular weir-forming baffle 16(17), and a helical scroll 14(15) disposed to transport solids to a central zone 13. The central zone 13 is divided into two parts 20, 21 by an annular baffle 22 which prevents spilling over between bodies of water 18 contained between the end baffles 16, 17 and the dividing baffle 22. A loading chute 19 is arranged to discharge solids to be separated into the end portion 12, while in each part of the central zone, a chute 25(28) is arranged to catch solids lifted up by scoops 23(26) on the barrel wall. The chute 25 in the first part 21 directs solids to the end portion 11, whilst the chute 28 in the second part 20 is arranged to discharge solids from the barrel. Thus a first output of suspended solids is provided over the first end baffle 17, a second output of suspended solids over the second end baffle 16, and an output of sediment from the second chute 28. <IMAGE>
