Abstract

The pulse amplitude produced by at least one pulse generator 1 in an automatically controlled device for relieving labour pains by transcutaneous electrostimulation is automatically adjusted in dependence on the output of a cardiotocograph 4 used to measure uterine contraction and/or on the output of an electromyograph 6 measuring the labour pain caused by the uterine contraction by measuring potentials at muscles reacting to the labour pain. The muscle potentials with and without stimulation may be periodically compared and the stimulation level controlled in response thereto by a computer programmed with the optimum relationship between the sensation of pain and the stimulation intensity. <IMAGE>
