Abstract

A paper web for use in making a battery separator is formed from a furnish containing a synthetic pulp the fibrils of which are filled with an inorganic filler, the web incorporating a wetting agent. The synthetic pulp may comprise polyethylene or polypropylene fibrils. The furnish may include polyester fibres. The wetting agent may be an anionic, cationic, or non-ionic surfactant. It may be incorporated in the synthetic pulp or added to the furnish or sprayed on the wet web during manufacture. When added to the furnish, it may be impregnated in a porous silicate carrier. The battery separator may be formed from sections of the paper web and provided with ribs, dimples, or other projections. The separator may be impregnated with a melamine-formaldehyde resin to improve its resistance to wear.
