Abstract
In the secondary cooling zone of a continuous casting installation the shape of the cross-section of the cast strand, especially of a rectangular strand, is influenced by cooling the corners of the cast strand at their edge regions. Deviations of the shape of the strand 12 from a reference cross- section are determined, e.g. by electrical measurement and comparison of the diagonals, and the spray cooling of the strand by means of nozzles 7, 8, 9, 10 is controlled in accordance with the determined deviations in a manner such that oppositely situated corners of the strand which enclose an obtuse angle (7, 10) are more intensely cooled than the oppositely situated corners of the strand which enclose an acute angle (8, 9) to improve the shape. <IMAGE>
