Process for the continuous casting of metal strands and mold to carry out the process When continuous casting of metals, both in non-ferrous metals and in particular in Stahllegie ments, the liquid metal is one end of a z.
B. made of copper existing open pass through mold, within which by the cooling effect of the mostly water-cooled molds this metal solidifies in an edge zone and the at least partially solidified strand at the other end of the Ko kille continuously withdrawn.
A hard outer layer or crust is thus created inside the mold when the liquid metal comes into contact with the mold wall, which mostly consists of a highly thermally conductive material in order to increase its heat dissipation capacity.
In order for the partially solidified strand to be pulled out of the mold, the solidified surface layer must have a minimum strength that can withstand the sum of all mechanical forces that occur, including the static pressure of the liquid interior of the strand.
The greater the amount of steel cast in the mold per unit of time, i.e. the higher the casting speed is selected in relation to a given extruded profile, the greater the amount of heat dissipated per unit of time must be in order to solidify the above-mentioned minimal edge layer . The performance of a continuous casting mold or the achievable casting speed therefore depends largely on the heat dissipation performance in the mold.
In a zone directly below the liquid metal level in the mold, the metal touches the mold wall, with the solidified edge layer being pressed against the wall by the liquid pressure. As soon as the solidified layer has reached a certain thickness, it shrinks, whereby the corners of a polygonal profile primarily detach from the mold,
while a \ MU's # n-üksr- # -cig. = can be pressed against the mold wall by the liquid pressure for a certain distance until these also loosen. There is good heat transfer in the area of contact; However, as soon as the strand detaches itself from the mold wall, the gas layer in between acts as an insulating medium and the heat dissipation is greatly reduced.
It has already been proposed to choose the mold so short that the strand emerges from the mold immediately after it has completely detached from the mold wall. It could then immediately be cooled further, for example by spraying it with water.
In practice, however, this is not practical, since a certain minimum mold length must not be exceeded, which guarantees that, firstly, with a brief increase in the casting speed, the detachment zone does not reach the end of the mold, which would result in a breakout, and secondly in the If the hardened edge zone breaks immediately after its formation due to local load peaks, there is a possibility
to allow the liquid metal to solidify again on the mold wall. After the mold has to be extended beyond the separation zone for safety reasons, the problem arises how the cooling effect can be increased after the separation zone.
The method according to the invention for continuous casting of strands in molds, in which the liquid metal is fed in at one end and the at least partially solidified strand is withdrawn at the other end, is characterized in that a coolant is used against the direction of movement of the strand between the mold bore and allows the strand to flow through.
The mold for carrying out the method according to the invention is characterized in that channels leading from the mold inside through the wall to the outer surface are arranged in the mold wall.
The invention is then explained, for example, with reference to drawings. 1 shows an axial section through a schematically illustrated mold with a metal strand, FIG. 2 shows a section through the mold according to FIG. 1 along line 2-2, FIG. 3 shows a cross section through a mold analogous to FIG. 2, with a different arrangement the coolant outflow channels, FIG. 4 shows a detail from an inner wall of the mold, the cross section of which is shown in FIG. 3,
5 shows a detail from an axial section through a two-part mold with an annular suction gap that can be changed in cross section.
1 and 2 show a mold 1 with a preferably made of a highly thermally conductive material, for. B. copper, existing mold body 2, which has a square cross-section and a through hole 3 square cross-section.
Four symmetrically arranged bores 4 are provided in the mold body 2, which run parallel to the bore 3 and are provided for the flow of a coolant. In the continuation of the exit end of the bore 3 there are guide rollers 5, between which a metal strand 6 is guided.
Coolant supply lines 7 and 8 with spray nozzles 9 and 10 are arranged behind the guide rollers 5. The mold body 2 is seen with channels 11 ver, which are provided with threaded nipple bends 12 at their outer ends. The aim is to position the channels 11 immediately below the height in which the strand 6 settles from the mold bore 3 due to contraction.
The flowing metal from the melting furnace (not shown) arrives in a thin jet 15 in the bore 3 of the mold. The bore 3 is for the most part filled by the metal strand 6, which has solidified in its edge zones 16 with a width S increasing downwards towards the mold outlet and has a correspondingly narrowing liquid paste-like core 17.
The metal strand 6 is withdrawn as much as possible at a constant speed, being guided in the guide rollers 5 after leaving the mold body 2.
From the spray nozzles 9 and 10, coolant jets 18 spray against the metal strand 6 in order to additionally cool it and to reinforce its solidified edge zone 16. The channels 11 are connected to a vacuum system (not shown) via the nipples 12, so that the coolant flows up between the mold wall 20 and the metal strand 6 through the gap, counter to the pulling direction of the metal strand 6, in the bore 3 and enters the channels 11.
However, it is also possible to press the coolant through instead of sucking it through. The coolant used is preferably water, saturated steam or a water-steam mixture.
The coolant not only has the task of dissipating heat. It occurs instead of the air layer in the gap, which forms after the shrinkage of the metal strand 6 between this and the mold body 2. The coolant therefore serves not only as a calorie tug, but as a means to increase the heat transfer, with which the entire cooling process of the metal strand 6 is accelerated quite significantly.
In the arrangement of the channels 11 provided in FIG. 2, the cooling effect is limited in particular to the corners of the square extruded profile, since the channels open or open only at the points corresponding to the profile corners.
In Fig. 3 an arrangement is shown in wel cher instead of the strand edges in particular the strand surfaces are cooled. For this purpose there are bores 30 in the walls 31 of the bore 3 of the mold body 2. These bores 30 open into collecting channels 32, which in turn are connected to a vacuum generator.
The walls 31 of the bore 3 are, as it can be seen in Figure 4, provided with grooves 33 which are arranged parallel to the axis of the mold. They serve to distribute the coolant evenly over the walls 31 in such a way that no uncooled points occur on the strand 6. It can also be advantageous to use channels or
To arrange bores at different heights of the mold body 2 in order to take account of the changing location of the separation point of the strand 6 in the mold body 2.
In order to prevent the channels 11 or the bores 30 from clogging when the coolant is sucked in at the start of pouring, the starting line known in continuous casting technology must at the start of pouring up through the openings of the channels 11 or bores 30 from below against the drawing movement of the metal strand 6 be introduced. This prevents liquid metal from flowing into the inlets of the channels 11 or bores 30 instead of the coolant and clogging them.
It can therefore be advantageous to provide means in order to be able to close these inputs, especially when pouring begins. A throttling can also offer advantages during the pouring process in that the cooling effect can be changed and possibly relocated locally.
The mold shown in detail in FIG. 5 is made in two parts for the reasons mentioned above. The two parts 40 and 41 are arranged to be axially displaceable to one another. The outflow channels are summarized here as an annular channel 42, which is provided at individual points with connection bores 43 leading to the outside through the mold body part 41 in order to be connected to a vacuum system, e.g. B. to a water jet pump to be connected.
By moving the two parts 40 and 41, the annular gap width can be changed and, in particular, closed at the start of pouring.
As a result of better cooling, the described invention enables the casting speed to be increased while maintaining the same quality and thus increasing the production volume.
