Abstract

A magneto-resistive readout element comprises a narrow strip (1) of ferromagnetic magneto-resistive metal with crystalline magnetic anisotropy in the form of a thin film on an insulating substrate (2), wherein the crystal structure of the film is oriented so that the crystalline anisotropy and the shape anisotropy inherent in the shape of the strip (1) combine to give an easy axis of magnetisation (R) which is at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the strip (1). The strip (1) may be permanently magnetised in the direction of the easy axis (R) to provide its own basing field. <IMAGE>
