Abstract

Heavy liquid hydrocarbons 3 containing carbon residue are cracked in the presence of 1 to 10 parts by weight of a molten salt selected from basic compounds of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and mixtures thereof, at least a part 8 of the molten salt being used in the form of a mist, and the amount of steam (1 and 5), reaction time, reaction temperature and amount of the molten salt being controlled so as to render the weight ratio of carbon to the molten salt after cracking not more than 0.002. <IMAGE>
