Abstract

201,600. Marks, E. C. R., (Miehle Printing Press & Manufacturing Co.). April 4, 1922. Inking-apparatus. - The inking-rollers and vibrating rollers of a printing-press are mounted in a common support in such a manner as to be movable out of engagement with respect to each other when the rollers as a whole are moved into inoperative position, and means are provided for firmly locking the inking and vibratory rollers in contact with one another when they are in operative position. The rollers and their common support are removable as a single unit from the machine, and slip means are associated with the driving-mechanism of the vibratory rollers to prevent excessive endwise movement which might result from operation of the press for a fraction of a cycle while the rollers are in inoperative position. The vibratory roller 15 is carried by brackets 20 rigidly secured to the shaft 17 by pins 21, and the inking-rollers 13, 14 are carried by brackets 16 loose to the shaft 17 but having widened slots 18 engaging feathers 19 thereon, so that when the rollers are swung into inoperative position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the roller 15 is separated from the rollers 13, 14, the brackets 16 of the latter having stops 22 engaging a cross-bar 23. For firmly locking the rollers in contact with each other when they are in operative position, the brackets 20 of the vibratory roller 15 are provided with stop buttons 24 adapted to contact with stops 25 on the brackets 16 of the inking rollers, these stops being held in contact by locking-devices 26, Fig. 5, each operated by a handle 29 and having a semicircular flange 28 adapted to be turned behind a pin 27 on the brackets 20. The shaft 17 supporting the brackets and rollers is held in the impression cylinder frames 12 by means of projecting members 31 engaging slots 30 in the brackets 20, so that, by slipping the slots over the projections 31, the shaft 17 and its attached brackets and rollers may be detached from the machine as a single unit. Excessive endwise travel of the operating screw 37, Fig. 7, of the vibratory roller 15 is prevented by the following means. The screw 37 works in a nut 38 rotatable within a bearing 39, the friction between nut and bearing being sufficient to prevent rotation of the nut during normal running of the machine. Collars 40, 44 rigid with the screw carry projections 41, 45 adapted to co-operate with projections 42, 46 on the sleeve nut 38. If the press is moved whilst the rollers are in inoperative position, it may happen that on bringing the rollers again into operative position the time relationship of the vibrating roller to the other operative pressparts is disturbed, tending to displace the screw 37 beyond the limit of its endwise movement in one or other direction. In that event, one of the projections 41, 45 will engage one of the projections 42, 46 on the nut 38 and rotate it in its bearing 39, thereby preventing excessive endwise travel of the screw.
