Abstract

In binding a body of leaves 10 to produce a bound book band of hot melt adhesive is applied along an adhesive- receiving area on the spine of a book cover 14 and/or on the spine of the body by projecting the adhesive as a thin flat transverse sheet from a flat fan orifice past which the cover or body is moving. The direction of relative movement is parallel to the spine, with the orifice extending transversely to the direction of movement. The adhesive, which is desirably applied in foam condition, provides an adhesive band that extends parallel to the direction of movement. This method of binding can be used to bind both hardbacked and paperbacked books. <IMAGE>
