Abstract

Moulded plastics material having an attractive wood-like appearance and a high impact strength is produced by subjecting a tow or fabric of filaments of an acrylonitrile copolymer to the action of steam at a temperature of at least 115 DEG C, at a pressure of at least 0.7 kg/cm<2> (gauge) (10 psig) and moulding the tow or fabric within a shaping enclosure. The steam treatment can be carried out while confining the tow within a shaping enclosure or steam treatment can be followed by moulding. A tow of filaments may be shaped by being drawn through a fixed die or the tow or fabric may be compression moulded.
