Abstract
A method of applying indicia to a metal surface in which the metal surface is first cleaned, the indicia are printed on the surface in ink 2 by any suitable printing process and a firmly adhering metal coating 4 is then deposited on the ink-free portions 3 of the surface so as to embed the ink in the metal coating. The thickness of the deposited metal layer is approximately the same (a) as the thickness of the ink layer, but may be more (b) or less (c) than the thickness of the ink layer. The metal coating may be deposited by electro-plating or by a chemical process by immersion in a solution which contains metal ions. The method may be used to apply indicia to a non-metal (e.g. plastic) surface if the surface is first metallized. <IMAGE>
