Abstract
In the preparation of methylchloroform by vapor phase chlorination of 1,1-dichloroethane, the formation of undesirable chlorohydrocarbon reaction products is suppressed by conducting the vapor phase reaction in the presence of a controlled amount of elemental oxygen or carbon dioxide gas.
