Abstract
An actuator for a wire matrix printer comprises an armature 17 connected to a print wire 14, a preloaded spring 25 and a solenoid within the armature 17 which, when energised, moves the armature against the action of the spring 25. When the solenoid is de-energised, the armature 17 moves on under the action of the spring 25 so that the armature 17 and print wire 14 move towards the paper 10. The extent of travel of the armature 17 and wire 14 under the direct action of the spring 25 is limited (by ring 26 engaging step in bore) whereby the inertia only of the armature 17 and the wire 14 causes the impact of the wire with the paper. A weak spring 28 may return the wire 14 to the position shown. <IMAGE>
