Abstract

The invention is concerned with peak current limiting circuits for use in a.c. supply circuits susceptible to waveform distortion as a result of excessive peak current demand. Such problems may arise where a standby inverter a.c. power supply is used to feed a supply rectifier having large capacitance. In a peak limiting circuit of the invention rectifying means 8, e.g. a bridge rectifier, is inserted in series with the supply and is arranged to feed load current of either polarity unidirectionally through an iron-cored inductor 7. The inductor additionally has a unidirectional free-wheel current path in the same direction as the load current so that the instantaneous value of the free-wheel current imposes a limit on the maximum value of a peak current. Single phase and three phase arrangements are described. <IMAGE>
