Abstract

Apparatus for the underwater launching of a submersible vessel 4 comprises a launching tube 2 for accommodating the vessel and to be mounted with a top portion extending above water to above wave level and a bottom portion extending underwater to an exit port below wave level, a hoist 18 for lowering and raising a submersible vessel in the tube to and from the exit port, and mechanism operable selectively to permit the flow of water into and out of the tube in accordance with the external wave motion and to isolate the interior of the tube from the external wave motion. Such a mechanism may comprise a sleeve 12 which can be adjusted to open or close apertures 10 in the tube wall. The opening at the bottom of the tube can also be closed. Alternatively the tube is in two portions 46 and 42 which can move into and out of sealing engagement with portion 46. Both portions have openings 52 which are covered by flaps 50. <IMAGE>
