Abstract

In the device for, and method of, producing an electrical signal dependent on the density of an electrically conductive fluid, at least one float (5) is immersed in the fluid, the or each float (5) having a different electrical conductivity to the fluid. Electrical detection means are then used to monitor the resistances of first and second zones (3, 3') within the fluid, which zones (3, 3') are so arranged that, within the measuring range of the device, the higher the density of the fluid the greater the proportion of (one of) the float(s) (5) within the first zone (3) and the less the proportion of (one of) the float(s) (5) within the second zone (3'). These means may be constituted by three electrodes (E1, E2, E3) connected in a bridge circuit (4), the resistances (R1, R3) of the first and second zones (3, 3') forming two adjacent arms of the bridge circuit and further resistances (R2, R4) forming the other two arms. The voltage UM formed at the diagonal of the bridge circuit is dependent on the ratio of these resistances and therefore on the density of the fluid. The method has application generally for measuring the density of electrolytes. <IMAGE>
