Abstract

The primary current of the ignition coil 22 is controlled by an electronic switch 25 which is controlled by a monolithic integrated circuit 5 in accordance with signals received from a triggering generator 1 and from a primary current sensor 30. The integrated circuit includes a current regulator for controlling the maximum primary current and also an integrator/comparator arrangement for determining when primary current flow should commence, whereby the dwell time is limited to the minimum time necessary to ensure that the maximum primary current is reached. At high engine speeds, at which the maximum primary current cannot be reached, this arrangement is overridden to ensure an antidwell time of 1 ms. <IMAGE>
