Abstract

A microwave oven comprises microwave energy source 36 having a predetermined frequency, a heating cavity 38 and slow wave transmission circuit, e.g. a meandering conductor 40 for propagating microwave energy through the cavity with a phase velocity less than the speed of light, the characteristics of the slow wave circuit, the size of the cavity and the frequency of the microwave energy being such that at least one cavity resonant mode is established within the heating cavity. The use of the slow wave structure reduces the minimum frequency required to create a cavity resonance mode in a cavity of a predetermined size or conversely reduces the size of the cavity necessary to sustain cavity resonance modes at a specified frequency. <IMAGE>
