Abstract

A retaining member 15 for use in the preassembly and simultaneous erection of two or more neighbouring mine roof supporting arches including channel-section single or multi part roof segments 3, wall segments 12 and upper and lower struts 7 for joining neighbouring roof segments together comprises a U-shaped member 15 which has two limbs and a web which connects the limbs at one of their ends. The U-shaped retaining member 15 is releasably attached by the ends of the limbs to one of the lower struts 7 of the roof segments so as to project toward the centre of the gallery and defines a passage cross section substantially larger than the cross section of the wall segments 12 and in which a wall segment 12 is supported. The U- shaped retaining member may be fitted with a roller. When the arch is in position the clamps 13, 14 are loosened so that the wall segments 12 can slide down and then be clamped the roof segments 3. In an alternative method of assembly hooks replace the retaining members 15, Fig. 5 (not shown), and the lower ends of the wall segments are also supported by hooks depending from a central support apparatus which advances the arches. In a further method the wall segments are supported on a palette slung below the central support apparatus, Fig. 6 (not shown). <IMAGE>
