Abstract
A telecommunication system has a microphone 1 connected to a telecommunications receiver via a gain control circuit 8 which is arranged to vary the amplitude of the receiver output in accordance with ambient acoustic noise generated signals from the microphone. Preferably the gain control circuit is arranged to increase or decrease the amplitude of the receiver output by approximately 0.5 dB per 1 dB increase, or decrease, respectively in the acoustic noise generated signal from the microphone. A compressed signal from compressor 2 is fullwave rectified at 9 and averaged by a resistor and a capacitor 6 to provide the gain control signal. The system is useful in acoustically noisy environments such as military aircraft crew compartments. <IMAGE>
