Abstract

Apparatus 10 for plasma processing a surface of an article 12 comprises a processing chamber 14 into which one or more articles can be placed, and a species supply 16 for supplying species to the processing chamber, the species being capable of forming a plasma. Plasma forming means 18 is operable to establish an electrical field inside the processing chamber for forming a plasma when the species is supplied thereto so that a surface of the article can be plasma processed. Evacuation means 20 controls evacuation of gas or vapour from the processing chamber. In use, an amount of species is supplied to the processing chamber which is sufficient for a required plasma processing step on a surface of an article to be performed, and the evacuation means restricts evacuation of the chamber during the processing step, and evacuates the chamber after the processing step has been performed. A method using the apparatus is also disclosed. The apparatus and method are used on articles 12 which produce outgases which reduce the effectiveness of the plasma processing step, and the evacuation means 20 restricts evacuation of the outgases during the processing step. The plasma forming means 18 is controlled to compensate for the effect of the outgases on plasma processing during the plasma processing step. The species may be a monomer suitable for plasma functionalising the surface of the article 12.
