Abstract
An impact-resistant display device comprises a first thin glass layer 422 less than 400 micrometres thick, a second base glass layer 438 from 0.1 to 0.5 millimetres thick, an adhesive layer 452 positioned between these layers and less than 200 micrometres thick, and a sensor layer 448 between the glass layers to cover at least a portion of these layers, where the display device has a total thickness less than 800 micrometres and passes a ball drop test of 2 grams at greater than 4 feet (1.22 metres). The adhesive layer is selected based on a Youngs modulus measurement for the adhesive, preferably greater than 1 GPa. The sensor layer is adaptable to communicate with a printed circuit board, and may incorporate a touch-screen sensor. A method for making a display device is also provided, where the adhesive layer is from 0.01 to 0.4 millimetres thick. A coating, or ink pattern 424, may be provided, acting as a masking layer. The structure may provide a rugged, ultra-thin display device.
