Abstract

A sliding caliper disc brake incorporates a friction pad assembly comprising a generally planar backing plate (1) to which a pad (2) of friction material is secured. The backing plate (1) having a raised portion e.g. in the form of a rib (7) against which the caliper member 11 abuts and can pivot, during use, when the caliper member 11 flexes. Fingers (16) of the caliper member (11) engage the rib (7) so that any flexing of the caliper member (11), when under load, does not cause the friction pad assembly to try to tilt; such tilting causing uneven wear. Any such flexing merely results in the fingers (18) pivoting on rib (7). <IMAGE>
