Abstract

Loading apparatus for loading a granular material (e.g. grains of green malt) onto a floor of a chamber in which the material can be subjected to treatment, comprises a substantially horizontal pivot beam 1, Fig. 1, one end of which is rotatably mounted on an axle 8 secured to the roof of the chamber with its axis substantially vertical, a ring rail 17 also secured to the roof of the chamber so as to be coaxial with said axle, first drive means 22, including a motor and having wheels running on said ring rail, connected to said pivot beam at or near the other end thereof and being arranged to move the pivot beam about the axis of said axle, a support 2 suspended from the pivot beam by pivotally mounted rods 31, a spindle transmission 36 for adjusting the distance between the pivot beam and the support, a travelling girder 3 accommodated by the support and axially movable relative thereto, second drive means 51 for moving the travelling girder relative to the support, a screw conveyor 4 mounted in the travelling girder, third drive means 59 for driving the screw conveyor to convey material from the material inlet 11 in the region of the axle 8 and at or nearer one end of the conveyor towards the other end of the conveyor, a trough 67 of increasing aperture through which the material falls onto the floor beneath a sensor flap 76 for monitoring the layer of material deposited on the floor and for actuating the first drive means in response to a change in the layer from a desired value, and a sensing roller 91 for actuating the second drive means as a function of the shape of the boundary of the floor thereby to determine the position of the travelling girder and tho screw conveyor relative to the support during a loading operation whereby the other end of the conveyor follows the boundary during the loading operation, and an even layer of material is deposited on the floor. <IMAGE>
