Abstract

The backing plate 26 of a brake pad, is provided with at least one rivet having a hollow cylindrical wall (13) integral with and projecting from one surface (14) of the plate. A bore is initially preformed through the plate, and an extrusion pressure is applied to the opposite surface (16) of the plate around the preformed bore to form a recess terminating within the plate at a narrow annular shoulder surrounding the bore and to simultaneously extrude from the plate a cylindrical rivet wall (13). The backing plate has a plurality of hollow rivets formed in this manner and projecting from one face of the plate. A conforming pad 28 of friction material is centered on and secured to the backing plate by staking the rivet walls (13) within counterbores in the friction pad. <IMAGE>
