Abstract
Lead particles in the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine are agglomerated in packings of wire mesh or expanded metal which are contained in spaces defined within an elliptical section casing (1) between the casing wall and a perforated pipe (17) extending between perforated transversely extending walls 5 and 6. Inlet pipe 14 leads into an inlet chamber 12 defined by a perforated tubular wall 13 attached to transverse wall 5, porous packing filling the annular gap between the casing and the wall 13. Gas passes either through holes 16 in wall 5 or through holes 23 in pipe 17 into the packing 19, purified gas leaving the packing through holes 21 either directly into outlet pipe 22 or via outlet chamber 9 and apertures 23. External ribs on the casing help cool the device and so enhance particle agglomeration. The device functions also as an exhaust silencer. <IMAGE>
