Abstract

A method of producing an insulation component from a web of lofted sheet material, using a press which comprises providing upper and lower dies, both coated with semi-permanent non-slip coating, the upper die has a continuous knife 24 for cutting the web, and a continuous metal frame 23. The frame is for closing the material which his adjacent to the edge cut by the knife 24. The upper and lower dies are inserted into a press which has upper and lower heated platens, the upper die being inserted at a spacing from the upper plate, and may be orthogonal to the closure plane of the press. The metal frame 23 is drawn to the upper platen 11 and heated to a pre-determined temperature by direct contact and the press is subsequently shut to cut the web and weld the rim of the material adjacent to the cut. The press remains shut for a pre-determined length of time to fuse the material, then opened and the insulation component removed. The outer frame 26 may be mounted in channels 14 which themselves may be adapted to move in unison away from the upper plate. The channels may be suspended from the upper plate by fluid rams 16. Also claimed for is the insulation component obtained by following the method, which may be for use in a motor vehicle.
