Abstract

A mirror for reflecting a non- uniform light beam, eg from a laser, on to a target area 6 so that a uniform spatial power density is obtained thereat, has a surface comprising a plurality of small concave mirror elements 4 whose axes meet at a common point 3. The elements abut closely to avoid leaving "flats" on the surface. Preferably the surface is itself concave, with the element axes meeting on its axis and the target area 6 located at its focus. The radii of curvature of the elements is such that the target area is irradiated by the plurality of beams from these elements beyond their foci 5. A method of producing such a mirror comprises indenting a polished concave deformable-metal blank with a tool having an appropriately radiused end-surface and aligned to pass through the centre of curvature of the blank as the blank is rotated. <IMAGE>
