Abstract

A random access system is provided in an apparatus for reproducing from a rotary recording medium on whose tracks information signals and address signals are recorded. The system includes a reproducing transducer 16 for picking up the signals from the tracks of the rotary recording medium. Address signals from transducer 16 are compared in comparison means 54, 55 with signals representing a selected address and, when the difference in the corresponding addresses is outside a predetermined range the comparison means 45, 55 causes means 20 to move the transducer 16 relatively quickly. However, when the difference between the addresses is within the predetermined range, the transducer 16 is stopped and means 57, 69 for generating a displacement signal corresponding to the difference between the addresses causes tracking control means 37 to move the reproducing element of the transducer 16 a relatively small distance so as to reduce the difference between the addresses to zero with the transducer substantially stopped. <IMAGE>
