Abstract

A process for the purification of sulphate solutions containing nickel and optionally cobalt by removal of copper present as an impurity comprising cementation at a pH of 3.5-5 with pieces of electrochemically active nickel containing 0.005-0.1% sulphur. Ferrous iron can be removed from the solutions by oxidising it with oxygen- containing gas at a pH of 3.5-5 in the presence of a predetermined amount of dissolved copper and co- precipitating it with some of the copper prior to the cementation.
