Abstract

A method of recovering a deposit from the sea bed using a surface vessel 20 and first and second suction vehicles 27 / 30. The suction vehicles traverse the sea bed to vacuum up the deposit and are each connected to the surface vessel by a respective flexible riser 26 / 29. A slurry of the deposit is transferred along the risers from the suction vehicles to the surface vessel. The method comprises moving the suction vehicles across the sea bed in a plurality of lanes such that they travel substantially further than the surface vessel. The vehicles turn or reverse at the end of each lane (3, FIG 1A). The deposit is mined with substantially without gaps between adjacent lanes. The suction vehicles may move across grids. The vehicles may operate in separate grids. The suction vehicles may have a mouth at each end.
