Abstract

The invention provides an electrically driven cleaning machine such as a sweeping machine 10 and a method of manufacturing such a machine which includes the step of providing first and second power arrangements differing from each other. The method includes the provision of a hopper 28, a suction fan, a suction nozzle 26, an operator seat, operator controls, a chassis 18, front and rear wheel hubs 14a, 16a, an electric motor for driving at least one ground engaging wheel of a first set of wheels, and a power arrangement assembly step. One of the power arrangements includes a right hand module and a left hand module, the modules typically comprising at least two of first battery, a second battery, an internal combustion engine (53, 63 see figs 3, 4) coupled to an electricity generator (54 see fig 3), a cooling system including a radiator (65 see fig 4), an emissions abatement system (67 see fig 4), a fuel tank (66 see fig 4) and a fuel cell (73 see fig 5). A fuel cell module may include a hydrogen fuel tank (74 see fig 5). Preferably, operation of one of the power arrangements may be replaced by operation of the other power arrangement for cleaning an area.
