Abstract
Turbine apparatus 1 for locating in a fluid flow, eg tidal or river flow, includes a turbine shaft 3 and a plurality of movable blades 5 that are circumferentially distributed relative to the turbine shaft 3. Each blade 5 is movable between an active configuration 5AC, providing a high resistance to fluid flow, and a passive configuration 5PC, providing a low resistance to fluid flow. The blades 5 may be pivoted to the end flanges 7 of a drum 2. The turbine assembly 1 also includes blade controlling means 11 adapted to control the orientation of the movable blades 5 between their active passive configurations. The control means may comprises a guide member in the form of a rotatable cowling 11 having a vane 13 which acts as a rudder. The cowling 11 may have an inner guide eg provided by guide rails. The turbine may be mounted with its shaft 3 vertical on an offshore building 19 to drive a generator 16 located above water. The turbine may be disabled by positioning the vane 13 circumferentially with respect to the cowling 11 (figs.5,6).
