Abstract

An absorption process comprises passing waste gas in a vessel (2) transversely through a travelling bed comprising granular, non-regenerable sorbent material e.g. lime, limestone or magnesia with or without a catalyst and absorbing therein at least one of sulphur dioxide, chlorine and fluorine from the waste gas. In the vessel are upright spaced rows of louvre members (3) to contain the bed. Each member is inclined at 15 DEG to 25 DEG to the vertical and the ratio of the length of each member (3) to the spacing between each member (3) is 4:1 to 5:1. The waste gases are fed at (1) to the interior space of the reactor and are sucked through outlet (5). Sulphur dioxide and the halogens may be removed separately by providing two parallel louvred travelling beds. <IMAGE>
