Abstract

A turbidity meter has a chamber (2) through which a liquid flows upwardly. An electrical light source (8) directs a beam of light downwardly into the liquid and at least one photo- electric detector (11) in a side wall of the chamber detects light scattered from the beam, either laterally or rearwardly. The source intensity is monitored (14) and the brightness of the source controlled automatically (13) so as to maintain a constant brightness in operation, the source being operated at a fraction only of its rated power. The chamber may have an inclined bottom 3 such that any light reflected from the bottom is directed away from the detector 11. <IMAGE>
