Abstract
An apparatus for determining or classifying the "colour" of a gem stone 13 comprises a source 14, a filter wheel 19 and a photomultiplier 22 for analysing the light passing through the stone in at least two different colour bands (typically red and blue). In another constructional arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown) the stone is mounted in a hemispherical reflector having input and output of light by light guides. The detector circuit has channels for each colour and means for obtaining difference values therebetween and means for utilising the sum of all channel signals to adjust the gain of the detector. <IMAGE>
